Air-fried Tofu

This recipe for air-fried tofu is simple, quick, so easy to make. You can make the whole thing in about half an hour, and that includes pressing the tofu! Here’s the ingredients…

Ingredients

One block of firm tofu (approx 400g)

One tablespoon of smoked paprika

One tablespoon of garlic salt

half a tablespoon of onion salt (optional)

One tablespoon of olive oil

Here’s what to do…

1# The tofu needs the liquid removed as otherwise it will be quite bland as it will not absorb the flavour of the spices so well. Either with a tofu press or by wrapping the block in paper towel, place on a shallow plate and place a heavy pan stacked with a few tins inside. Leave for about twenty minutes. You can also freeze your tofu, then defrost thoroughly. This process also removes the liquid so the tofu can absorb the flavour of the spices.

2# Once the tofu is pressed and you’ve removed as much of the liquid as possible, slice the tofu block into squares, just under two centimetres squared.

3# In a medium sized (big enough to contain the sliced tofu so that it moves freely when shaken) plastic food storage box, put in the paprika, garlic, onion and olive oil. Throw in the sliced tofu, replace the lid, then shake, ensuring all the tofu is covered. You can do this to music for added fun if you like!

4# Once the tofu is well covered, and your arms are tired, cook the tofu in the air fryer. Set it on 200 °C and cook for 10-12 minutes, turning half way through.

I serve mine with vegetables, with salad, or sometimes with a chilli dip for a naughty, but healthy weekend snack.

So why tofu?

Tofu is made from soy milk and is really good for you. You can substitute tofu for chicken in many dishes as it takes on the flavour of whatever it is marinated in, but you should always extract the liquid first. Tofu is used a lot in Asian cuisine. It has many nutrients, is a rich source of protein, and has many other health benefits. It is even said that it helps with menopausal symptoms – a plus definitely for me then!
