Boom- don’t throw it out!

Follow Creative Explained

I was scrolling through Facebook. Boom! With this striking catchphrase, this fella has something to say.

This guy is the Dave Grohl of the plant world, he certainly makes gardening rock and roll.

Creative Explained

Armen Adamjan, who goes by the name ‘Creative Explained’ is the author of three books including ‘Don’t Throw It Out’, and is also a TikTok sensation. He makes dynamic shorts and videos on ‘how to grow’ plants from vegetables and fruit, and also makes use from the bits we might throw away.

How did this guy get into making gardening videos?

Born in Armenia, but later moved to Denmark, and then settled in the USA, Armen has always had a passion for gardening. Over the years he has picked up a few tips and tricks and transferred his knowledge to online videos for us all to see.

Majoring in filmmaking at art school, his videos are not only fascinating but very entertaining as well. His enthusiasm, bordering on wacky, makes gardening cool. A bit different from Alan Titchmarsh, or for you older readers Percy Thrower. Now I’m showing my age!

BOOM! Don’t throw out your apple pips!

Can you really grow an apple tree by putting a seed in the fridge? According to Armen you can.

Here’s me, giving it ago…

And after they began to sprout in the fridge I planted them out, and look what happened – I’m so chuffed!

All instructions on how to grow apple trees from pips are in his first book, “Don’t Throw It Out!” You can buy a copy, and also his other books here. Watch this space, I’ll let you know how it goes. I quite fancy an apple tree in my back garden. Hell knows the planet could do with more trees.

Not just rock and roll plant hacks…

Ok, just to clarify, this guy is not doing vegan hacks as such. For example, in one of his videos, he makes a face mask out of eggshells and plant food with baked, ground bones. As a vegan, if you just ignore the non-vegan segments of the videos (there really aren’t that many) and watch the rest of his videos you can really learn something. Most of the hacks use fruit, vegetables, and stuff you’ll find in most kitchen store cupboards, or food we throw away. It’s not only eco-friendly but cost-effective too.

BOOM! Put waste to good use

We’re all guilty of wasting things. I know in the past I’ve thrown away plenty of carrot ends, strawberries that are on the turn, and lemon peels. But by following Armen’s advice, you could save a lot of money, and have the pleasure of harvesting something you’ve grown yourself for next to nothing cost-wise.

Apparently, you can grow a pineapple plant from a pineapple stalk.

This is a pineapple stalk that I’m drying out. Hopefully it’ll grow into a plant, fingers crossed.

And you can grow strawberries from, well, a strawberry!

This is incredibly satisfying believe me.

Boom, don’t throw it out – there’s cleaning hacks too!

He also does a video on cleaning tips. This includes hacks for descaling a showerhead and making a kitchen cleaner, using products such as white vinegar and baking soda (known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK), and lemon peels.

Boom, don’t throw it out, check it out!

I cannot recommend Armen Adamjan’s books and videos more. I love his ideas. They are not only practical, inexpensive, they are also good for the planet. Look up ‘Creative Explained’ on Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. You don’t have to be an expert gardener to try his gardening hacks. Go on, give it a go. If an idiot like me can do it anyone can.
