Hilda – the calf that’s going to save the world…
but is she?
I recently saw this news report on Good Morning Britain about Hilda the genetically modified cow.
Hilda was purposely bred using the IVF technique. You can read all about it here. The idea is that she will produce less methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Her parents were specially chosen for their methane efficiency. The embryo produced was then implanted into an older surrogate mother. Sounds simple and effective. But is this like Dr. Frankenstein has gone too far?
Pull the ‘udder’ one!
People are missing a valuable point – animals will still be suffering!
Isn’t this manipulating nature again for our gain as humans?
Scientists deem this as a positive approach to cutting methane emissions – but is it? We humans have spent years messing up the planet. We blissfully dismiss the welfare of our descendants, the less fortunate, the vulnerable, and the welfare of animals, as long as we can continue to live our fortunate lifestyles, especially those of us in developed nations. And now, scientists are feebly trying to right our wrongs by meddling with nature. Isn’t what is happening with factory farming awful enough for animals?
As always, people will look adorably at this cute little calf like she is fresh out of a Disney film. Blissfully ignorant as to what will eventually happen to her. This girl will probably end up like all the others. More likely bred until she can hardly stand, then killed in the most inhumane way. Just watch any animal rights documentary to find out more. I recommend ‘I could never go vegan’, read my review here.
Hilda the calf that’s going to save the world – what a load of bullocks!
In my opinion, breeding methane-reduced cows is just an attempt to gloss over all the mistakes we humans are making towards climate change.
Why don’t people stop eating meat and dairy?

The media is patting the scientists on the back like everyone should believe this lame idea is going to help combat global warming massively. The more effective solution would be for more people to stop consuming animal products. It’s supply and demand. If we consume fewer animals, whether it be for food or other consumables, less will need to be supplied. Therefore, mass breeding will go down. With fewer cattle, less methane will be produced. Simple. This website explains why we should be adopting a plant-based lifestyle.
It is estimated that 56 billion cows are killed every year around the world for food. At the expense of the poor factory-farmed animals, this so-called ‘climate-friendly’ idea will keep farmers making money. Sadly, that’s what makes the world go round – If only it were love instead.
